The Chia seed is originally from Mexico. It is nutrient-dense and energy-boosting. One of the characteristics that makes chia seeds so unique is they can absorb almost 10 times their own weight in water. Because of this, chia seeds can prolong hydration and improve nutrient absorption of electrolytes in the colon. They can slow digestion and keep you feeling fuller for longer, which can reduce your sugar cravings. Chia seeds are rich in fibre, protein and anti-oxidants. Recent studies on this powerful little seed show promise for promoting healthy skin, reducing the signs of aging, and supporting the heart, digestive tract, building lean muscle and has been linked in trials to reversing type 2 diabetes.
Chia seeds can help to cut your cravings as they not only keep you feeling full, but are loaded with calcium and magnesium; in fact they contain more calcium by weight than milk. When you are getting enough calcium and magnesium you don’t crave cheese and ice cream. When the seeds are hydrated they are able to magnify or intensify other flavours as they don’t have any flavour of their own.
To get the proper nutrition out of Chia Seeds, you need to either grind them or, even better, soak them in water – about 1 Tablespoon to ¾ cup of water. Soak them for as little as 10 minutes (if you don’t have time) to overnight in the fridge. Drink the seeds, along with the remaining water and ‘gel’ that has formed around each seed. This can be added to your morning smoothie, or any other soup-type dish as they have almost no flavour of their own. *Try using the strained gel instead of ½ the amount of butter in any recipe for less fat and more nutrients and anti-oxidants! Simply strain the seeds out and use the gel (the seeds can be added depending on what you are making). Chia seeds can be purchased as White, Black, Red, mixed or Organic.
